Lund: You didn't toast. You know, I'm thinkin' you one of 'em In'e'pen'ents.

Mal: And I'm thinkin' you weren't burdened with an overabundance of schooling. So why don't we just ignore each other until we go away?

08.13.2011   -   Taking a break from house-scrubbing to watch Serpico

It was definitely time to scrub my flat. I think I've said hello to at least fifteen spiders today - I don't want to think about what they must be thriving on! Thought I deserved a break now.

I know nothing about Serpico except that it was on someone's list of top movies. And after having watched The Godfather, I must admit I am very intrigued by Al Pacino circa 1975.

from here

The true story about an honest New York cop who blew the whistle on rampant corruption in the force only to have his comrades turn against him.

I'm not exactly sure what I think of this film. I mean, it was well made and it was very interesting to see a young Al Pacino in a role that had a bit more variety to it that his role in The Godfather. And it was neat to see the seventies being filmed in the seventies. However, the film did jump around a lot - sometimes the only way to tell was by the state of Serpico's beard. Also, I'm very much an animal person. It was wonderful to see Frank Serpico interacting with a bunch of different animals (and they were all so comfortable with him!), but I have to wonder why he had so many of them if he was even a little invested in his work, and what happened to them? Only the dog was accounted for, so there's a few mice, fish and a cockatoo that mysteriously left the story somewhere. Can I also say how much I loved Al Pacino's hair in this movie? Because I did. A lot.

08.09.2011   -   Getting hats #262, #263 and #264 ready while watching The Godfather

A record-breaking day! I've just sold three hats: one to the UK, one to the US and one to Australia! I just love how diverse fellow Firefly fans are.

As I'm getting the hats prepped, I decided to put on The Godfather, which I've never seen. Might actually prevent me from getting these hats ready in good time - I'll be too busy watching the film. How sad is it that my main knowledge of this film comes from random references from romcoms with Tom Hanks?!

The aging patriarch of an organized crime dynasty transfers control of his clandestine empire to his reluctant son.

I had way too many interruptions while watching this. I'll need to watch it again soon to make up for it. Regardless, I feel a little cheated by all of the spoofs and references that I've encountered in other movies and shows. I wish I could have seen this film when it had just come out - I'm absolutely sure it was mind-blowing at the time. I feel like I knew too much before watching it, and I hate that feeling: it's so disrespectful to the story because you don't build up any expectations if you already know how everything is going to happen.

On another note, it is so very, very strange to watch a film where the actors are twenty years younger than how they were when you first took notice of them! In my case, I first started paying attention to actors in the 1990s, so everyone in this film looks far too young!

08.09.2011   -   Watching Sleuth

I was looking around on IMDB and came across a few lists of favourite films that people had put together. Sleuth was on one list that had a number of movies that I think are amazing, so I thought I'd check it out.

A man who loves games and theater invites his wife's lover to meet him, setting up a battle of wits with potentially deadly results.

This film is all about oneupmanship! And playing, both a part and a game. Michael Caine and Lawrence Olivier must have had so much fun with it. The two characters are so alike, I almost feel sorry for the woman in question - it seems like, under only slightly different circumstances, the two men would probably sneak off to spend time with each other instead of with her.

08.07.2011   -   Finished #261, now watching Whip It

Now watching yet another movie I've wanted to see for a while - Whip It. In the trailer, they're having so much fun!

from here

In Bodeen, Texas, an indie-rock loving misfit finds a way of dealing with her small-town misery after she discovers a roller derby league in nearby Austin.

I can't remember the last time I've had this much fun watching a movie! I just couldn't stop laughing. And you know that the entire cast had so much fun making it. Just awesome. Why have I never seen Andrew Wilson in anything?! He had the funniest lines of the movie. And it great to see Zoe Bell in something where she actually speaks but doesn't go on a vengence kick (she's got quite a lot of credits to her name as a stunt double).
